OPAL - Outdoor Play and Learning

A Commitment to Better Play

At our school, we believe that play is an essential part of every child's development. That's why we are proud to be embracing OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning), a nationally recognised programme that helps schools transform playtimes into rich, enjoyable and meaningful experiences for all children.

By developing our outdoor environment and expanding the range of play opportunities available, we are creating a school where children can explore, create, imagine and thrive.

Why Play Matters

Play is far more than simply having fun. Through high-quality play experiences, children develop important skills that support their learning, wellbeing and future success.

Play helps children to:

  • Build confidence and independence
  • Develop creativity and imagination
  • Strengthen communication and social skills
  • Learn teamwork and cooperation
  • Develop resilience and problem-solving abilities
  • Improve physical health and wellbeing
  • Build positive relationships with others

By investing in play, we are investing in the whole child.

It was the best playtime I've ever had.

What Will OPAL Look Like?

As part of our OPAL journey, children will have access to a wider range of activities and resources during playtimes. These may include:

  • Den building and shelter making
  • Small world play
  • Construction and building activities
  • Creative and imaginative play
  • Role play and dressing-up opportunities
  • Outdoor games and physical activities
  • Exploration of natural spaces
  • Loose parts play using a variety of everyday materials

Children will be encouraged to make choices, follow their interests and work collaboratively with others, helping them develop confidence and independence.

Developing Skills for Life

Our aim is to ensure that playtimes are inclusive, engaging and beneficial for every child. Through OPAL, children learn valuable life skills including:

  • Leadership
  • Communication
  • Cooperation
  • Creativity
  • Responsibility
  • Resilience

These skills support children's development both inside and outside the classroom and help prepare them for the future.

Working Together

The success of OPAL relies on a strong partnership between school and home. We are grateful for the support of our families and wider community as we continue to develop exciting new play opportunities.

From resource donations to volunteering and sharing ideas, every contribution helps us create an environment where children can enjoy a rich and rewarding play experience.

I can't believe how fun it is.

Our Vision

We want every child to look forward to playtime, feel included, and have the freedom to explore, create and make lasting memories with friends.

Through OPAL, we are creating a vibrant outdoor environment where children are active, engaged and inspired every day, helping them develop the confidence, resilience and skills they need to flourish both in school and beyond.
