Welcome from Headteacher

On behalf of the children, staff, and governors, I welcome you to St Peter’s Church of England Primary School.

We are a welcoming, inclusive family school with a strong Christian ethos, a sense of community and a commitment to excellence for all children in our care.  We aim to ensure that each one of our children feels safe, and is enthusiastic, secure and confident.  We do this by nurturing each child’s uniqueness and responding to individual needs.  We want each child to be successful in their learning and to make a meaningful contribution to the world.

We continually aim to be an excellent school where people care more than others think is wise, risk more than others think is safe, dream more that others think is practical and expect more than others think is possible. ( You can find out more about our vision for excellence by going to that section of our website.)

We are extremely proud of our school and the achievements of all of our children.   Our OFSTED inspection in May 19 recognised the many exceptional things we do at St Peter's:

The staff are uncompromising in your ambition for all pupils.  You have created a learning culture that enables all pupils and staff to excell.

St Peter's has teachers with a wealth of specialist knowledge in the teaching of reading and phonics.

The capacity to drive school improvement is exceptionally strong.

Pupils are making “substantial and sustained progress

Pupils are exceptionally well behaved, confident and self-assured.  They thrive on the challenges presented to them in lessons. Their excellent attitudes to learning have a significant impact on their strong achievement over time.  Pupils share and discuss their work with pride.

Parental feedback is overwhelmingly positive about the efforts made by staff to ensure that children are happy, feel safe and are well looked after. Parents say that staff value and respect all children.  For example, a comment typical of many, said, ‘The school is very inclusive and makes sure that every child has the opportunities that their peers have’.

We are a Church of England Primary school and have very close links with Portishead Church of England and in particular with St Peter's Parish Church.  We aim to value and introduce faith and welcome to all regardless of their faith or belief.  We were inspected as a Church School in March 2015 and were graded as Outstanding in all areas of that report.  In 2018 we refined our vision of excellence to include "Excellence in all we do, Excellence in who we are and Excellence in our service with others".     You can find out more about our vision and the values that underpin this in other sections of this website.

We think very carefully about the learning we offer to each child and you can find out more about this by watching our Excellence as Standard film below.

In June 2017 we were designated a Teaching School.  In this role we train teachers, provide high quality professional development and support to other schools.  We are proud of the quality of teaching and learning we offer at St Peter's and very pleased to be able to share this with others.  In October 2018 we were designated one of 32 English Hubs across England.  This designation was in recognition of our expertise in the teaching of Phonics and Early Reading and our ability to support other schools.  We will be supporting up to 85 schools during this academic year.  In January 2019 we hosted two teachers from Shanghai and welcomed over 400 teachers to the school to observe lessons and learn about our own approach to the teaching of mathematics.

We are the largest primary school in Portishead and as such gain offer resources, and expertise in Primary Education.  In September 2014 St Peter's became a 630 place primary school.   As part of the expansion we have benefited from  a 4.3 million development and have many state of the art facilities -  making St Peter's a great place to learn.

We are very proud of our school and I hope that through this website, you get a taste of what we offer and how we work.   Whether you are a parent, a pupil or a friend of the school, I hope you enjoy finding out about St Peter’s. If you are a prospective parent, then I would be very happy to meet you and show you around.   We are also happy to provide paper copies of information on our website if this is helpful to you.

We look forward to meeting you and to a productive partnership with you as parents.
